BE Great Weekend Celebrates Culture and Diversity in Downtown

Posted on

Join us for three days of cultural richness in downtown as we celebrate Black History Month and Lunar New Year.

On Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16-17, Occidental Square will fill up with live music, dance performances and a medley of flavors for our BE Great Weekend celebrating Black Excellence. Day one will feature a market with vendors offering art, clothing, food and merchandise for purchase. Treat yourself to Afro-Brazilian cuisine, West African dishes, Cajun treats, beer, ice cream and more while you browse.

On day two, we crank up the volume with three hours of music, including live performances by the Jewel Tones, PHER, the Pike Street Drummer and DJs Ish and Nazo, along with other talented local artists. Grab a friend and get ready to show your best moves, or pull up a seat and immerse yourself in the music. All are welcome to this free, soulful celebration.

Then, on Sunday, Feb. 18 in Westlake Park, we welcome the year of the dragon, as Mak Fai Kung Fu Dragon and Lion Dancers perform the hypnotic movements of this legendary symbol of wisdom, power, dignity, fertility and auspiciousness. Close by, we’ll light up the Westlake Park arch and hand out free red envelopes with surprises inside.

Looking for more free fun in downtown? DSA/MID managed spaces will continue to host games, music and daily activities throughout February.
