Third Avenue Continues to Brighten up With Installation of New Lighting
Posted on

The lights are shining brighter in downtown Seattle. Earlier this month, new catenary lighting was installed along and across Third Avenue, between Stewart and Pine streets, building on the success of Spark Block.
Coordinated and funded by DSA and downtown property owners, Amazon and Expedia Group, this project creates a more welcoming environment for pedestrians and transit users alike, marking another milestone in the ongoing revitalization of Third Avenue and downtown Seattle.
“These lighting improvements not only elevate the aesthetic of Third Avenue but contribute to a greater sense of safety and activation,” said Jennifer Casillas, vice president of public realm & ambassador operations for DSA/MID. “By enhancing the environment with creative elements, we’re fostering a vibrant and inviting space for all.”
The installation of these lights, completed March 15-16, serves as an extension of Spark Block, where foot traffic between Stewart and Virginia streets saw significant increases after lighting was added in the fall. One month after the September installation, Spark Block recorded its highest foot traffic since March 2020, with continued growth through the end of the year.
Key benefits of the project include:
- Enhanced ambiance: Catenary lighting adds a visual focal point, creating a warmer, more inviting atmosphere.
- Safety and activation: The lighting improves the perception of safety and encourages more foot traffic in the area, extending activation throughout the area.
- Community impact: The collaboration between DSA and local property owners, with generous support from Amazon and Expedia Group, highlights the power of community partnerships in transforming urban spaces.
These improvements are part of a broader effort to revitalize Third Avenue and make it a more dynamic aspect of Seattle’s downtown landscape. The lighting installations have already sparked interest in further beautification efforts along the corridor, creating a ripple effect of positive change throughout the area.
