Lights and traffic on Third Avenue

SEATTLE, March 18, 2025 — The Downtown Seattle Association is excited to announce the installation of new lighting strung along and across Third Avenue, extending the vibrancy of the Spark Block — between Stewart and Virginia streets — to a new stretch of the busy corridor. The latest enhancement, which includes striking catenary lighting between Stewart and Pine streets, marks another milestone in the ongoing revitalization of Third Avenue and downtown Seattle. Coordinated by DSA/MID and funded by DSA/MID, Amazon and Expedia Group, this project creates a more welcoming environment for pedestrians and transit users alike.

The new lights were installed March 15-16 on a key block adjacent to the original Spark Block, continuing the momentum of community-driven urban improvements. After engaging with adjacent property owners and managers, the project received full buy-in from all stakeholders.

“These lighting improvements not only elevate the aesthetic of Third Avenue but also contribute to a greater sense of safety and activation,” said Jennifer Casillas, vice president of public realm & ambassador operations for DSA. “By enhancing the environment with creative elements, we’re fostering a vibrant and inviting space for all.”

The installation of these lights follows the success of Spark Block, where foot traffic saw significant increases after lighting was added in the fall. One month after the September installation, the Spark Block recorded its highest foot traffic since March 2020, with continued growth through the end of the year.

Key benefits of the project:

  • Enhanced ambiance: Catenary lighting adds a visual focal point, creating a warmer, more inviting atmosphere.
  • Safety and activation: The lighting improves the perception of safety and encourages more foot traffic in the area, extending activation throughout the area.
  • Community impact: The collaboration between DSA and local property owners, with generous support from Amazon and Expedia Group, highlights the power of community partnerships in transforming urban spaces.

These improvements are part of a broader effort to revitalize Third Avenue and make it a more dynamic part of Seattle’s downtown landscape. The lighting installations have already sparked interest in further beautification efforts along the corridor, creating a ripple effect of positive change throughout the area.
