Position Overview
The Safety Assistant is responsible for providing field supervision and support to ambassadors who are engaging in a wide range of situations, including providing support for individuals experiencing homelessness and/or mental health issues, educating people regarding civility ordinances, interactions with business owners and residents, and assisting tourists with directions and transit information.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with recruiting, hiring, selecting, orienting, and training employees, developing personal growth opportunities.
  • Assist in the planning and coordination of daily assignments and tasks for ambassadors.
  • Conduct daily team meetings and properly deploy staff to the field when needed.
  • Review and complete daily activity reports/logs, accident reports, etc., for accuracy and completeness as specified by safety supervisor.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with local government service providers, property managers, merchants, and members of the Downtown Seattle Association.
  • Work closely with outreach and community mental health programs to connect individuals in need of resources.
  • Advise safety supervisor of trends and activity within the MID
  • Represent the MID and the public safety program at special events and community meetings in a positive and professional manner.
  • Address performance or behavior concerns through coaching, training and/ or corrective action to ensure desire performance is achieved.
  • Ability to coach, mentor and supervise individuals who may or may not have had a past criminal background or addiction challenge.
  • Evaluate employee work habits to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Assist the supervisor in conducting formal performance evaluations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to consistently exemplify MID/DSA core values: Collaboration, Perseverance, Innovation, Excellence, and Integrity.
  • Ability to demonstrate customer service experience and effective leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of and/or willingness to learn how to interact with people affected by mental health and substance abuse issues.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written. English is required; additional language proficiency is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with emphasis on emotional intelligence, de-escalation, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure, in fast-paced and changing environments.
  • Ability to work in all public spaces in the downtown area.
  • Required to maintain a clean and neat appearance.
  • Must be able to provide a valid ID.
  • Must be able to pass a bicycle riding assessment with emphasis on low riding speed.
  • Basic knowledge of Windows, MS Word, Excel, and Outlook is a plus.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work Environment – Work outdoors for the entirety of each shift in all weather conditions, with exposure to potentially hazardous waste/substances.
Physical Demands – Must be able to walk and/or ride a two-wheeled bicycle for 8-10 hours. Must be able to lift 40 pounds.

Employment Details
DSA is committed to internal and market equity. The hourly range for this position is $23.50 – $29.50. Salary is determined based on internal and market equity, internal and market data/salary ranges, and the applicant’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. We will hire at the beginning of the salary range to allow future salary growth based on an employee’s performance, professional development, and increases in responsibilities and duties.
